Dr. Wendler is a former German diplomat and historian. He was born and raised in Hamburg, and studied at the universities of Hamburg, Vienna, Southampton (UK), and at Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale, Illinois. He received his M.A. at SIU in 1965 and his doctoral degree in Hamburg in 1978. As a diplomat he was posted to the German embassies in Dublin, Paris, Tel Aviv, and Rome. From 2001 to 2005 he served as Germany`s Consul General in Los Angeles, California.

Mr. Wendler has travelled widely in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. From 1964 to 1966 he taught German studies and history at SIU, from 1968 to 1971 he was an instructor for English and history at the Hamburg Academy for Economics and Politics, and in 2007 he was a guest lecturer at the University of California in San Diego teaching a course on the European Union. Mr. Wendler is a specialist on public diplomacy, foreign cultural policy, and transatlantic affairs and is currently active in the field of international cultural exchange.
