Course description

The Freie Universität Berlin will offer a summer composition course taught by Samuel Adler of the Juilliard School lasting six weeks. Up to 15 students studying at a university or college will be accepted to the program.

1. The course will consist of at least one private composition lesson taught weekly by Professor Samuel Adler plus a three hour master class given by other professional composers.

2. Each student will be matched with one or more performers and write a work for that performer during the program. The compositions will be performed at a final concert during the last week of classes in Berlin.

3. In addition, students have the opportunity to take a class in conducting. Dr. Emily Freeman Brown will teach this class. She is the Music Director and Conductor of the Bowling Green Philharmonia and Opera Theater at Bowling Green State University in Ohio. (optional at extra cost)

4. Students also have the opportunity to enroll in a semi-intensive German language class according to their proficiency level, their composition course schedule allowing. FUBiS offers German language classes on five proficiency levels, from beginner to advanced.

5. FUBiS is a fully accredited institution, permitting transfer of credits to participants’ home institutions.

A group of up to 15 applicants will be selected through an independent selection committee. Each applicant will be notified via email about the selection committees’ decision by March 10, 2010. Selected applicants are then asked to register online.
